About the Philippine Society for Music Education

The Philippine Society for Music Education (PSME), founded in 1971, is a non – stock, non profit, SEC – registered national organization dedicated to the advancement of music education. With a membership of hundreds of music teachers, musicians, school music administrators and students, it seeks to provide directions towards creative and effective music instruction in the pre-school, elementary and secondary levels.

The Society strongly advocates a general education that recognizes music as vital to the total development of the student.

A national affiliate (INA) of the International Society for Music Education (ISME)from 2000 to 2006, the PSME continues to avidly pursue the following goals and objectives:

  • Raise the level of consciousness on the role of music as imperative in the aesthetic development of the Filipino, in the formation, preservation and transmission of cultural heritage and in the development of nationhood;
  • Upgrade the standards of music instruction through continuing music education training programs, workshops and seminars for classroom teachers;
  • Encourage the development of instructional materials for music;
  • Promote the performance of Philippine music on native musical instruments;
  • Coordinate with government and private educational institutions and provide assistance in the formulation of policies in music education and in recommending standards to be achieved in the various levels of classroom music instruction;
  • Form dynamic linkages with other music and cultural organizations and institutions having similar or related areas of concerns.
